What is IBS?

Updated: Jul 8, 2023

Irritable Bowel Syndrome is a common, long-term problem. People have different symptoms with some people severely affected. These can last for a few days or for a few months and can be associated with eating certain foods or periods of stress. Estimates are that one in five of us may experience IBS, which usually comes on in our twenties. Twice as many women are affected as men. NICE recommend that after 12 months, those who do not respond to pharmacological treatments should consider a referral for psychological interventions, such as Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), hypnotherapy, and/or psychological therapy.
